Market Volume Imbalance
Market Volume Imbalance (MVI) signals help you identify when there is a significant imbalance in the buying and selling activity in the market.
Key Points to Understand
1. Not All Signals Are Tradeable and it’s important to note that you shouldn’t follow every signal blindly.
2. Trend and High Volume are Crucial:
For a signal to be valid and tradeable, it must align with the current market trend and show significant volume. This ensures that the signal is strong and not just a random fluctuation.
3. Volume Settings:
It’s vital to set your volume settings according to the daily volatility of the market. Here’s why:
- Low Settings & High Volatility: You’ll get too many signals, most of which will be useless.
- High Settings & Low Volatility: You won’t get any signals at all.
- Recommendation: Adjust the volume imbalance settings to match the daily market conditions.

MVI are very versatile events and can be adjusted based on personal strategy and preferences.
How does it work technically
TradeFinder reliably depicts market volume accumulation by measuring specific behaviors between buyers and sellers of current market or aggressor volume. The market volume imbalance signal indicates a pattern of high imbalance between transacted market buys and sells.
Example of how market volume imbalance work
Pullback Time and Price Change
If consecutive MVI signals happen within a specified time, and if the price moves less than a specified number of ticks in the market direction (trend), additional MVI signals will be suppressed.

Market Volume Imbalance Settings
Based on a user-defined, asset-specific volume threshold, the Market Volume Imbalance signal is triggered when (1) traded volume exceeds the defined threshold level and (2) the formula’s parameters are met. Important: The Market Volume Imbalance will work for all markets: Futures, Stocks, and Cryptos. MbO data is not needed!
Settings window of MVI
Market Volume Imbalance Line
- Enable / Disable
- Enable or disable the Market Volume Imbalance line in Bookmap subchart.
- Halftime
- Halftime defines the time when the current MVI value decreases to 0. It effects how 'fast' or 'slow' the value decreases to 0 and thus how many signals are being generated.
- MVI Line design
- Adjust the design of the MVI lines in subchart individually for Bid and Ask.
Market Volume Imbalance Signal 1 and 2
- Enable / Disable
- Enable or disable the Market Volume Imbalance signal on the chart by clicking the 'Enable' checkbox.
- Signal Level
- A minimum level of imbalance volume must be triggered to display a signal.
- Display mode
- TradeFinder provides 3 different display modes for MVI signals: Trigger On Max, Immediately, ZeroCross Trigger. See 'Display modes' for details.
- Design and Layout
- Click on the 'Edit' Button to change the symbol, color, position, 'show price' on the chart, and size of the signals on the chart. See 'Visuals' for more.
- Alert Sound
- Acoustic signal that sounds when conditions are met for a Market Volume Imbalance.
- Send Telegram Notifications
- Enabled / Disabled allows you to send a notification to the messenger service 'Telegram'.
- Enable Bookmap Notifications
- Enabled / Disabled activates the Sound Alerts in Bookmap.
Display modes
Display mode affect the way how and when MVI signals are triggered on Bookmap trading chart and can be adjusted for Signal 1 and 2 individually.
Display mode: Trigger On Max
Triggers the MVI events at the maximum value on the MVI line once the threshold has been reached on Bid or Ask.
The MVI Signal is triggered at the top of MV Stop Line once the Signal Level 300 has been reached (319 was the maximum in this example).
Once Trigger On Max is selected the following additional settings appear:
- Pullback Duration in minutes, Pullback Price Change in ticks, Fallback Trigger
- These settings help you find better tradable price level signals by reducing Market Volume Imbalance signals during strong market trends. If the price moves less than 'Pullback Price Change' ticks in the right direction since the last signal, MVI signals will be paused for 'Pullback Duration' minutes. 'Fallback Trigger' describes the fallback from maximum value that needs to be reached until the next event will be displayed.
Example: A pullback duration of 2 minutes and a pullback price change of 20 ticks means TradeFinder MVI won’t look for new swings for 2 minutes if the price moves less than 20 ticks (or 5 points in ES) in the right direction since the last signal. Fallback Trigger of 10% means that in case of a MVI signal triggered at a volume of thousand the volume needs to fall back to at least 900 to trigger again (10% of 1000 = 100 and 1000 - 100 = 900)
Display mode: Immediately
Triggers the MVI events once the MVI line reached the trigger volume either on Bid or Ask.
The MVI Signal is triggered directly after the the Signal Level 300 has been reached (309 was when the threshold was reached).
Once 'Immediately' is selected the following additional setting appear:
- Fallback Trigger
- Fallback Trigger describes the fallback from maximum value that needs to be reached until the MVI can be triggered again.
Display mode: ZeroCross Trigger
Shows events only after the MVI line zero value has been crossed.
MVI Signals are only triggered once the zero line in subchart has been crossed from Bid to Ask or vice versa.
Visuals
Visual settings of MVI
- Design
- Customizable from Symbol Only, Compact, Advanced, Professional.
- Symbols
- Arrow, Triangle, or Flag gives the signal a link to the event.
- Color
- Different customizable colors.
- Transparency
- Defines the symbol transparency on the chart. It makes it easier to spot crucial signals on the chart
- Layout
- Different Layouts are possible by dragging the slider to the right.
- Position
- Position the symbol on the chart to avoid interference with different symbols.
- Size
- It makes the information within the symbol box readable by enlarging the characters.
- Variable
- The Variable parameter makes the appearance of the symbol on the chart variable. That means the symbol will appear based on the defined volume number in multiple sizes, which is the multiple of the set base parameter.
Variable settings will visually alert the trader when higher than expected volume is transacted.
